[Q] Did you get married?

Sorry?

[Q] Did you get married?

No, we did not want to get married. I didn't want to and she also did not particularly want to. Until her father, who was a pediatrician, was dying. So her father bought us our first apartment, not this one, the previous one, on Hayarkon Street. But we said to ourselves: 'We will give him a gift before he dies, so that he'll know his daughter is settled'.  So we got married. It was a really special wedding. There was a rabbi, on Pinsker Street, No 2 or No 4, near Mugrabi, who conducted weddings at his house. So we arranged for 5:00 pm, I believe. We went there. There was a wedding before ours. We borrowed the quorum from the previous wedding, we borrowed a ring from the rabbi's wife, and what else did we need? That's how we got married. And from then on Rachel kept my calendar. There it says: '5:00 - wedding; 6:00 - by Shmuel Tamir'. And we went straight from there for one of our consultations with Tamir. I wrote a chapter about our relationship in the second volume of my reminiscences which should appear in two or three months,. What I can say is just one sentence: this match was very successful, because we were totally opposite.

Uri Avnery (1923-2018) was an Israeli writer, journalist and founder of the Gush Shalom peace movement. As a teenager, he joined the Zionist paramilitary group, Irgun. Later, Avnery was elected to the Knesset from 1965 to 1974 and from 1979 to 1981. He was also the editor-in-chief of the weekly news magazine, 'HaOlam HaZeh' from 1950 until it closed in 1993. He famously crossed the lines during the Siege of Beirut to meet Yasser Arafat on 3 July 1982, the first time the Palestinian leader ever met with an Israeli. Avnery was the author of several books about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, including '1948: A Soldier's Tale, the Bloody Road to Jerusalem' (2008); 'Israel's Vicious Circle' (2008); and 'My Friend, the Enemy' (1986).
