I nagle coś pęką w świecie. Opublikowałem kilka wierszy i zacząłem publikować recenzje i artykuły literackie w Życiu Literackim głównie. I jestem w redakcji Życia Literackiego i rozmawiam z redaktorem działu krytyki, Włodzimierzem Maciągiem.

Hermann Hesse wrote his famous story, The Glass Bead Game. It is fundamentally a metaphor about meditation, delighting in the essence of music and literature and art which us so hard to define. He created this metaphor through this strange glass bead game which seems to refer to some mythical instrument, but it gives a name to those hours spent reading, listening to music at various concerts and...

This idyll was interrupted by the events of March '68 when I was 22 years old, not quite 23. Suddenly, something in the world bursts. It's not that I was unaware of politics before March. I read newspapers, I listened to Radio Free Europe, I was interested in what was happening so I knew what was going on. I knew there was someone called Moczar who was a dangerous individual, that Gomułka had abandoned the path of a political thaw some time ago, but then later... March comes along by which time I'm already a young author. I had published a few poems and had begun to publish reviews and literary articles mainly in Życie Literackie. The funny thing was that following the first demonstration in Kraków which must have occurred very soon after March 8th – because Kraków always mirrored Warsaw, decisions were made in Warsaw, that's where the biggest dramas were played out and that's where they had their heroes, there was a prologue in the form of Mickiewicz's Dziady. In Kraków, things there... I mean, we had a theatre but we didn't have Dziady. I was in the editorial offices of Życie Literackie talking with the reviews editor, Włodzimierz Maciąg. I had brought him some new texts which back then, I found exciting every time this happened because maybe I'd get published and then I'd people throughout the whole of Poland would read my works. But he says, 'Did you know that there's a rally in the market square?' The editorial offices were a stone's throw from the market square, but I didn't know – the editor of Życie Literackie told me that something extraordinarily unusual was happening. So I ran over there. I breathed in a bit of tear gas, but no one hit me with a truncheon or anything like that so I was... The idyll was interrupted. But not in any tragic way.
