No i... i dojdę tutaj może na tej liście ludzi mi bliskich, zanim o rodzinie powiem jeszcze, do ostatniego mojego przyjaciela. Chyba on był najpóźniejszym, ale to niemniej była bardzo intensywna przyjaźń. To było właśnie z Krzysztofem Michalskim, który który wyjechał na stypendium do Niemiec w '80 roku z Polski i później zastał go stan wojenny i on razem ze wspomnianym już księdzem i jego przyjacielem bliskim i – co bardzo ważne – przyjacielem Papieża, Jana Pawła II, Józefem Tischnerem współorganizowali Instytut Nauk o Człowieku, w Wiedniu. Ta placówka do dzisiaj jest i odgrywa istotną rolę, ale szczególnie odgrywała istotną rolę do '89 roku, chociaż później też, przez wiele lat, do śmierci Krzysztofa. I mam nadzieję, że ona będzie odgrywała rolę, nie tylko akademicką, intelektualną. Przyjeżdzali tam i w radzie naukowej byli najwybitniejsi intelektualiści, z Europy, Stanów Zjednoczonych – to była taka niezwykła kolekcja. W konferencjach, które Krzysztof organizował, brały [udział] najwybitniejsze postaci świata intelektualnego – wspominałem o tym, że on organizował takie parapolityczne czy polityczne konferencje, na które zjeżdżali się rzeczywiście ludzie bardzo wybitni. On został też szefem grupy doradczej przewodniczącego Komisji Europejskiej 10 lat temu, kiedy problem tożsamości Unii już stawał i chodziło niejako o takie opracowanie wartości europejskich. Tam była grupa wybitnych intelektualistów z różnych krajów Europy, pod jego kierownictwem. I on równocześnie wykładał, nie tylko w Wiedniu kierował tym Instytutem, w Boston University był profesorem filozofii i założył tam filię swojego instytutu. Ja byłem w radzie naukowej tego instytutu. Tam były takie wybitne postaci jak Fareed Zakaria i szereg wybitnych intelektualistów jak Ira Katznelson, profesor z Columbia University. Tak że Krzysztof był nie tylko wybitnym filozofem, chociaż nie pisał za dużo. Był twórcą instytucji.

So here, while I'm talking about people I'm close to and before I move on to speak about my family, I'll say something about my final friend. He was probably my most recent one but it was still a very intense friendship. It was with Krzysztof Michalski who got a grant to go to Germany in '80 and was there later when martial law was imposed. He, together with his close friend and priest whom I've already mentioned, Fr Józef Tischner who was also very importantly the friend of Pope John Paul II, organised the Institute of Human Sciences, human studies in Vienna. This institution exists to this day and plays a very important role although it was especially important up to '89 and later as well. Well, for several more years, too, in the '90s until Krzysztof's death. And I hope it will continue to fulfil a role and not just an academic, intellectual one. The greatest intellectuals from the United States and from Europe visited there and were on the advisory board – it was an exceptional grouping. The conferences which Krzysztof organised were attended by the most illustrious figures from the intellectual world – I mention here that he organised parapolitical or political conferences which attracted very eminent people. He was also the head of an advisory group for the leader of the European Commission 10 years ago when the problem of the Union's identity was already arising, and they needed to define European values. There was a group of eminent intellectuals there from various European countries who worked on this under his leadership. He lectured not only in Vienna where he was head of that institute, but he worked in Boston, too, where he was a professor of philosophy at Boston University and he established a branch of his institute in Boston. I was on the advisory council of that institute along with outstanding people like Fareed Zakaria and several other renowned intellectuals, Ira Katznelson, a professor from Columbia University. So he wasn't only an exceptional philosopher, although he wrote little. He created an institution.
