Unfortunately, I wasn't able to achieve there something that I thought was important. Namely, just as the Gospels are divided according to the different days of the year, so I wanted the film I'd made to be called Ein Film fur Karfreitag meaning A Film for Good Friday and for German TV to show it on Good Friday. But I suspect they weren't courageous enough to do this, I think they may have also communicated with the Church authorities who perhaps weren't enthralled by my film. Perhaps they thought the film was too eccentric to show it on Good Friday. Nevertheless, the film was accepted, shown, dubbed very well. It didn't give me much satisfaction over there because like I said, it sank without much trace. However, I had great satisfaction over here.
Polish film director Andrzej Wajda (1926-2016) was a towering presence in Polish cinema for six decades. His films, showing the horror of the German occupation of Poland, won awards at Cannes and established his reputation as both story-teller and commentator on Poland's turbulent history. As well as his impressive career in TV and film, he also served on the national Senate from 1989-91.
