The filming circumstances of The Birth of Love

So we started shooting the film. And at the time it was... there were quite a few complicated things going on in his head, which was that he didn't want us to rehearse, he didn't want to do any rehearsals. So we filmed the scenes directly without rehearsing. So naturally he wanted synchronous sound, in no circumstances did he want to look at the camera, at the lens. We had taken a small video so that the checker could make his marks, so he said he didn't want us to have it in case he saw it, and he didn't want to watch it. And the direction was quite surprising because he went by the principle that everything had to be done exactly as it happened in real life. So we filmed in order. So in fact there were discussions, which were practical ones with... there were a lot of night scenes. So the producer had asked me... we were talking about salaries, etc., those are always absolutely dreadful conditions to discuss. And so we filmed at night, and I asked, 'So how does it work for the nights? Is it paid double and reclaimable, as it says in the collective agreement?' 'Well, no, double pay is out of the question'. 'All right, so they're reclaimable?' 'No, not reclaimable'. 'So in that case we're giving you... either way there is no overtime'. 'Well, so were going to be able to write it in the contract that overtime is paid double'. 'That's out of the question'. 'But since there aren't any, I don't see why we couldn't write it down'.

So, it's like that with all the producers. There is no overtime so there's no need to write down how much it will be paid. So eventually he says, 'We'll find a way that the nights instead of being... we'll see with Garrel, but instead of doing eight hour nights, we'll do four hour nights'. Well, yes, because since theoretically it's double pay and he doesn't want to pay double, so we do half. And it didn't bother Garrel at all. Either way since he didn't rehearse, it didn't take him too much time.
