Personne venait même me donner, me dire une ligne.

Je me disais.

So Hoa Binh is a film... I must have taken me three years to set it up. First of all, I really struggled with the screenplay because I had asked a few people for help and no one... no one was interested. No one even came to give me... to read me line. So there was a book that really moved me which had been written by a woman called... who wrote under the name Claude Lorrain, who was actually called Mrs Bayen. She had written a book called La Colonne des Cendres. La Colonne des Cendres being the famous column that guides Moses towards the Promised Land. And in fact she was a woman who was in the... At the time it wasn't called that, the non-governmental organisations. It was a women who took care of the sick and things like that. And I had gone...

Well, there was something that really struck me, it was that people had gone into this sort of war system where war was a part of life. I remember when we... There was... we could see the guys ploughing, and the American helicopters with what they called Dragon Spies, with the mini-guns in scuttle, they were firing the next field and the guy didn't even look up and his buffalos... I mean it had become ordinary... So they're firing at something. There was a sort of installation. I thought it's incredible to imagine that there are people turning thirty and they won't know what peace means. So I had... I was still quite... For those innocents, those who've done nothing wrong, the children. We can give children a gun and they'll go to war because they want to show off but they're not the ones that set off this operation. It's part of those people who... the innocents. So I was very interested to do that. I think that in fact it didn't interest anyone. It's part of, like nowadays when Pierre does his film on heaven, on the given word and honour, it's a flop because no one knows what it's about.
