[Q] Do you follow the work of young contemporary cinematographers? Do you go to the cinema?

No, I don't go to the cinema.

[Q] You don't go to the cinema?

No, no.

[Q] Why?

Because it's... Since I live in the middle of nowhere, I told you why. I have to take a car to drive the 30 kilometres to go to the cinema, and then try to find somewhere to park. So going to cinemas where they don't necessarily show the things that we want to see so...

[Q] When you worked, you went to the cinema?

I didn't go often because when I was filming, I never went to the cinema.

[Q] You didn't have time?

It wasn't that I didn't have the time, I didn't want to be...

[Q] You didn't want to be influenced by...

Distracted by other things. So I would go in between shoots. But at the same time, I was never really a film buff. I mean, it comes from the fact that I never thought about making films so I'm not... I never clung onto being a film buff. That's why I sometimes struggle to remember who I filmed with.

[Q] But did you pick your films randomly? When you heard about a film of which it was said... It's extraordinary, it's an important film? To go see them? Yes?

Well no, three quarters of the time I went to see films either because I found the film director interesting, or because I wanted to see... because there was a cinematographer who I knew who had done the cinematography, or an actor. But it was... I'm a good audience, in fact, three quarters of the time I quite liked the credit titles for that because I thought there were things... I don't care about the staff whether it's so-and-so or so-and-so. And it's afterwards at the end, that I think, those things were really well done, who did them? Because it isn't... I don't go see the films as a technician, I go as an average spectator. So inevitably when you're a technician there are loads of things, we think, 'Damn, there's a shadow there, which is quite bad'. 'I can see the shadow of a microphone at the back', or I don't know what. Well, there are things that we see but that's routine, it's obligation. But it's not why we go. That's why when people say, 'We could see a truck go by' or something like that, or in I don't know which film we could see the little... the big blue electric plug, which was... but how did you know it was blue since it was a black and white film?
