[Q] If you had to give advice to a boy or a girl who wants to become a cinematographer, what would you tell them?

Well, first of all, if... I've been asked this a few times, because once in a while I go give talks. There's somewhere where I give a talk in a... All of sudden I can't remember what the school is called... which is a school in the North of Paris. I go there every year. I go there every year around the same time; it's usually in March. And last time I told them, 'Listen, I am fed up of coming when it's freezing, I'll end up getting bronchitis one day because of coming here. I would like you to call me when it's... in the spring'. So they'll call me in the spring this year.

And so the first thing... so which advice? So the first thing, you need to learn about injustice. Because we live in a completely unfair world. I mean... so, explanation. I always tell a story that I read in one of Larteguy's books. I think it was No peace on earth. There was the story of a journalist who arrives, he gives his paper to the editor-in-chief, the guy reads the paper, he rips it up. 'It's really bad, you are joking, go rewrite it'. So he rewrites his paper, he comes back. 'It's impossible, you don't know how to write anymore, it's crap. Hurry up because we're putting this to bed tomorrow morning'. So the guy brings his paper back, he says, 'Well, that's good'. 'But it's the first one I gave you'. It's to teach what injustice is.

[Q] It's nice, it's very, very nice.

That's it, so what's injustice? Because first of all, I'm an example of injustice. If I hadn't met Godard I wouldn't be where I am today? True or false?

[Q] It's true. Well, it's true only to a certain extent.

You don't know that.

[Q] Neither do you.

Yes, well, practically. Because it isn't with my brilliant exploits in Ramuntcho and Island Fisherman that...

[Q] Yes, but you also know that this business is full of chance meetings.

Yes, yes, it's made of chance. All I am saying, it's exactly like the big hallway in Alphaville where Eddy Constantine pushes all the doors in search of Anna. I mean, at one point you have to push the doors and go in. Sometimes it may lead to nothing, in the same way as it can lead to something else. Like Cocteau said: there are some people who go from Paris to Nice by train, they're bored for the whole trip, whereas for other it's heaven. Well, so we have to try to make it heaven, but that's not easy. I mean injustice is... Why did they let me push the door that lead to nothing. Well, no, but it's not that, it's called chance. It's true that when we do things it isn't only chance, you also have to push the little bit of luck and think: well, Jean-Luc... I think that if he had asked Decae to do that, it would probably... he wouldn't have wanted to do it. Or he would have done like in the story I was telling with Storaro who absolutely wanted to have light in a small van. Well, but you make a film, I mean whether it's the take or the thing...

First of all, you can't only do one, you have to do a few films, because otherwise, if you only do one... So you can be part of the society of the film director's union where you say, 'I'm a film director even if we didn't do it'. All you have to do is pay the subscription. But you make a film, and however good it is, however much it is appreciated by all of the profession, you have a completely unpredictable judge, which is the public, which knows nothing about cinema. He can tell you, 'Your film is shit', and then you are staggered. And that's still injustice. And if, on the other hand, if you're an average guy and you make a film that's a complete success, you'll definitely get stuck repeating your average performance. So afterwards if you're only average you have got your arse in gear to become, not the best, but one of the best. But it's still an injustice. Why a guy... It's like if we had a barrel of good wine and we don't know if we're going to open it or not, we don't know. So then you have to get into it, that's it's really very complicated to do cinema. I think it's very complicated. That's when I find that it's unfair, because it isn't based on the quality of the people.
