French cinematographer, Raoul Coutard, has been nominated twice for the César Award for best cinematography which he won in 1978 for 'Le Crabe-tambour'. He has made over 75 films and documentaries, including 'À Bout de Souffle', Le Mépris' and 'Band à Part'. He remains the most acclaimed French cinematographer of his generation and one of the key figures of the New Wave.
So "Contempt", I mean it was a little different, because actually for the first time- Jean-Luc was making a film like you're supposed to make them. Meaning not necessarily filmed in order, but where there are set scenes to get through every day. Because since it was, actually the film was produced by de Beauregard and Carlo Ponti, but in reality the money came from the Americans. So, the name will come back to me later on, so they gave us money and every night they wanted us to send them a telex saying- We've finished the first column. We've done all the scenes. So that Jean-Luc- So in addition there was- Since there were two teams, there was a French team which was in charge of filming, and there were- there were some Italian workers and technicians, but it was still a big team. I mean there was both a French and an Italian production department. Well meaning that- And at the same time, suddenly, the problem with Jean-Luc- Because Jean-Luc, all the people that filmed with Jean-Luc, when we were shooting a film in France, everyone knew that Jean-Luc could have- I'm not going to say mood-swings- But that one day he could decide not to film, not to film the next day either, and the suddenly decide to make us come in on a Sunday and film 15 hours in the day. So and everyone accepted that, I'm not going to say happily but easily.
On previous films?
On previous films, of course. So there on the other hand with the Italians it was out of the question, there was a union, we had to eat at a certain time. So Jean-Luc- So at the same time it drove him- So there was also the management of the actors which wasn't difficult but it wasn't easy, not simple.
Alors "Le mépris", je veux dire c'était un peu différent, parce que en fait pour la première fois- Jean-Luc faisait un film comme on doit les faire. C'est-à-dire pas nécessairement tourné dans l'ordre, mais où il y a des numéros à descendre tous les jours. Parce que comme c'était, en fait le film c'était produit par De Beauregard et Carlo Ponti, mais en réalité le fric venait des Américains. Bon, le nom me reviendra tout à l'heure, donc ils donnaient des ronds et ils voulaient que tous les soirs on envoie un télex en disant- On a démoli la première colonne. On a démoli tous les numéros. Alors ça Jean-Luc- Alors en plus là il y avait- Comme il y avait deux équipes, il y avait une équipe française qui était la prise de vue, il y avait des ouvriers, des techniciens, quelques techniciens italiens, bon mais il y avait quand même une grosse équipe. Je veux dire il y avait à la fois une régie française et une régie italienne. Bon c'est-à-dire que- Et puis en même temps, d'un seul coup, le problème avec Jean-Luc- Parce que Jean-Luc, tous les gens qui tournaient avec Jean-Luc, quand on tournait un film en France, tout le monde savait que Jean-Luc pouvait avoir des sauts de- Je ne vais pas dire des sauts d'humeur-Mais qu'un jour il décidait de ne pas tourner, que le lendemain il pouvait aussi ne pas tourner, et puis si ça le prenait un dimanche de nous faire venir et puis de tourner 15 heures dans la journée. Bon et tout le monde acceptait ça avec, je ne vais pas dire avec bonheur mais enfin avec facilité.
Sur les films antérieurs ?
Sur les films antérieurs, bien sûr. Alors là par contre avec les Italiens il n'était pas question, c'était le syndicat, on bouffe à telle heure, truc. Alors Jean-Luc- Alors en même temps ça le rendait- Bon il y avait cette gestion aussi des comédiens qui était je vais dire pas difficile mais pas facile, pas aisée.
