I didn’t know Wajda on a personal level, though of course I knew his films, which I admired like everyone else. One day, he offered to adapt L’Affaire Danton which started as a play written by a Polish writer, Stanisława Przybyszewska, in the 1930s. It is about a woman who completely fell in love - though rather remotely - with Robespierre, and who had written a very long play that could not be staged as it lasted eight hours, criticising Danton and praising Robespierre. So Wajda had worked on a play for the theatre in Poland, where it was successful, shortening it a lot, and he asked me to make it into a film. What was really interesting for me was not only working with Wajda, but also to have a new understanding of our history, a foreign perspective. An outlook from a great Polish man at a time when Poland was communist. It was really interesting for me to see what could be said about the French Revolution in communist Poland.

So it was a project that we did together. We expected to shoot in Poland as it was cheaper, but Jaruzelski came to power as we were still working on the screenplay, and our exchanges with Poland were cut off and we could not even phone for weeks. Meanwhile, Wajda kept working on the screenplay in Poland, and as soon as contact was restored in ’81, I think, I went there bringing ham, butter, detergents, everything that was unavailable in Poland at that time. I noticed that Andrzej and his Polish screenwriter unintentionally had drawn the story towards anti-militarist views which were in fact against Jaruzelski. So we went back to work and I told him, ‘Look, the film will last longer than Jaruzelski, so maybe we should tone down that aspect’.  And he trusted me and said, ‘Rewrite the film entirely, as you like, and I will shoot it’. But we shot it in France, because we couldn’t do it in Poland anymore... so since we had less money, we had to adapt the screenplay, and the film was shot entirely here with some of the Polish actors, such as Pszoniak, and Gérard Depardieu as Danton. That was making the screenwriting process more difficult, as the two groups around Pszoniak, meaning Robespierre, Saint-Just and the others were Polish, and around Danton, Gérard Depardieu, Desmoulins played by Chereau and the others were French, so we could only have a few scenes between the two groups for practical reasons. And for the film I only wrote one scene between Danton and Robespierre, the restaurant scene. Quite a long scene, which we had been able to rehearse with Wajda, his cameraman and both actors before the actual filming, so I was able to adapt it.

To me, Danton is a very beautiful film, it is a film I have always loved, I have defended it a lot, and it was welcomed here with the praises of a famous historian, François Furet, who specialises in the French Revolution, and some people, of course, had some reservations but anyway, Danton made it into the history of film-making. The actors were wonderful, and Andrzej’s work was admirable. Afterwards, I helped him on The Possessed, though I didn’t write the screenplay, I only corrected a few scenes here and there. Since then, I have been following his work quite closely, and I met up with him just last month in Paris.

Je ne connaissais pas personnellement Wajda, bien sûr, je connaissais ses films que j’admirais, comme tout le monde. Quand un jour il m’a proposé de faire l’adaptation de l’Affaire Danton, qui à l’origine est une pièce écrite par une auteure polonaise Stanisława Przybyszewska dans les années ’30. Une femme qui, à distance, est littéralement tombée amoureuse de Robespierre, et qui avait écrit une très longue pièce inmontable, elle durait  huit heures, pour enfoncer Danton et relever l’image de Robespierre. Alors Wajda avait déjà adapté cette pièce au théâtre, en Pologne, où cela a été un succès, il l’a beaucoup raccourci et il m’a contacté pour en faire un film. C’est qui m’a intéressé beaucoup dans cette aventure, c’était non seulement de travailler avec Wajda, qui est un très grand metteur en scène,  mais aussi d’avoir sur notre histoire, sur l’histoire de France un regard étranger. Un regard d’un grand personnage de la Pologne, à l’époque encore communiste. Ca m’intéressait beaucoup, qu’est-ce qu’on pouvait dans la Pologne communiste dire de la révolution française ?

Alors c’est ce travail que nous avons fait ensemble, il était question de tourner le film en Pologne pour des raisons économiques, et au beau milieu de notre travail de scénario est arrivé Jaruzelski qui a pris le pouvoir, et nos rapports avec la Pologne étaient totalement coupés, on ne pouvait même pas se téléphoner pendant des longues semaines. Pendant ce temps là Wajda a continué de travailler sur le scénario en Pologne, et dès que les relations se sont rétablies, en ’81 je pense, j’y suis allé… en apportant d’ailleurs du jambon, du beurre, des détergents… tout ce qui manquait en Pologne en ce moment là. Je me suis rendu compte que, involontairement, avec son scénariste polonais, Andrzej avait tiré l’histoire vers un coté antimilitariste qui se dirigeait en réalité contre Jaruzelski. Donc nous-nous sommes remis au travail et je lui ai dit: écoutes, le film est destiné à durer plus longtemps que Jaruzelski donc on pourrait peut-être atténuer ca. Alors il m’a fait entièrement confiance, il m’a dit: réécrit entièrement le film, comme tu veux, et je le tournerais. Mais on a tourné en France car on ne pouvait plus tourner en Pologne… donc il a fallu adapter à la fois le scénario, parce que on avait moins d’argent… et le film a été tourné entièrement ici avec une partie des acteurs polonais, donc Pszoniak, et Gérard Depardieu dans le rôle de Danton. Ce qui compliquait aussi le travail de scénariste,  car les deux groupes autour de Pszoniak, c’est à dire Robespierre, St Juste et les autres étaient tous polonais, et autour de Danton, c’est à dire de Gérard Depardieu, Camille Desmoulins qui était joué par Patrice Chéreau et d’autres étaient tous français et donc il fallait qu’il y ait très peu des scènes entre les deux pour des raisons purement pratiques. Et en fait dans le film je n’ai écrit qu’une vraie scène entre Danton et Robespierre qui est la scène dans le restaurant. Une scène assez longue que nous avons pu d’ailleurs répéter avec Wajda, son chef operateur et les deux comédiens avant le tournage et que j’ai pu modifier à cette occasion.

Pour moi Danton est un très beau film, c’est un film que j’ai toujours beaucoup aimé, beaucoup défendu, qui a été reçu ici avec les grandes louanges de François Furet qui était un grand historien français, spécialiste de la révolution et puis des réserves d’autres côtés mais finalement  aujourd’hui Danton le film est entré lui aussi dans l’histoire. Les acteurs étaient merveilleux et le travail d’Andrzej admirable. Par la suite je lui ai donné un coup de main pour Les Possédés, je n’ai pas vraiment écrit le scénario, j’ai retouché quelques scènes, le scénario existait déjà quand il m’en a parlé. Et depuis ce temps là je suis très attentivement son travail puisque je l’ai encore vu, Andrzej, il y a un mois à Paris.
