Lova Eliav took them and he took us. When he resigned from the Labour Party a few people came with him, among them Matti Peled, Yaakov Arnon and Ruth Dayan − the ex-wife of Moshe Dayan. But Lova said: 'We cannot be without Mizrachi nor without Arabs'. By the way, there were always Arabs in my faction. Then he found the Black Panthers, calling for an equitable distribution of public resources, and against discrimination on an ethnic basis, who were in a bad state and every one of the leaders was seeking elsewhere. Some joined Mapai, some the communists, some went to the party − I forget which. Saadia Marciano remained unmarketed, so Lova Eliav took him. He would be the 'Mizcomponent'. And he found a very nice Arab, Walid Sadek Haj Yahia from the village of Tayibeh. With this quintet he wanted to put together a list for the Knesset. We decided that according to size at that moment, the list would be based on this quintet, over and over and over again: one, two, three, four, five, and then again: one, two, three, four, five, and so on because there were a lot of leaders on this list and too few followers. So Lova Eliav was number 1, Meir Pa'il number 2, I was number 3, Saadia Marciano number 4, Walid Sadek number 5, and so on. Lova Eliav's second candidate was Ruth Dayan, then Ran Cohen of Moked was the eighth, Amnon Zichroni from my faction and so on: Matti Peled, Yaakov Arnon, a very wise man, and so forth.

After a lot of emotional and excited discussions I remember at some point Marciano jumped in his chair: 'You are discriminating against the Mizrahi!' and he ran out. Lova ran after him. Lova Eliav was more aware of the issue of the Mizrachi than anyone else. Perhaps there was some psychological reason because there was a true story that after the War of Independence he was appointed by Levi Eshkol to oversee the settlement of the Lachish region which was deserted. And there was a shipment of new immigrants from Morocco. They were asked, 'Where do you want to live?' and they answered: 'We want to go to Jerusalem', because that was the only place whose name they knew. They were told: 'OK, you will be taken to Jerusalem'. And they were taken to the Lachish region which was completely deserted, to the east of Beit Guvrin, and were told: 'This is it, get down, down'. They said: 'No, we were promised Jerusalem'. Then Lova ordered the driver to raise the back of the truck and simply spilled them out. It was a well-known story and Lova remained traumatized by it. So when we founded the party it was extremely important to him that there would be Mizrachi. Anyway it had been his idea that there should be on every list from one to 100 Ashkenazi-Mizrahi, Ashkenazi-Mizrahi, and so on until we were able to persuade him otherwise… but we managed somehow with these five and started election campaigning. It was an impressive list, really impressive. We held election assemblies everywhere: in the big cities, in transit camps, development towns, Arab villages − everywhere.

Uri Avnery (1923-2018) was an Israeli writer, journalist and founder of the Gush Shalom peace movement. As a teenager, he joined the Zionist paramilitary group, Irgun. Later, Avnery was elected to the Knesset from 1965 to 1974 and from 1979 to 1981. He was also the editor-in-chief of the weekly news magazine, 'HaOlam HaZeh' from 1950 until it closed in 1993. He famously crossed the lines during the Siege of Beirut to meet Yasser Arafat on 3 July 1982, the first time the Palestinian leader ever met with an Israeli. Avnery was the author of several books about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, including '1948: A Soldier's Tale, the Bloody Road to Jerusalem' (2008); 'Israel's Vicious Circle' (2008); and 'My Friend, the Enemy' (1986).
