At one point I realised too late... I had been asked to make a film in Holland. And I met the director, it was...

[Q] Fons Rademakers.

Fons Rademakers who was an important...

[Q] A film called 'Like Two Drops of Water'?

It was called Like Two Drops of Water. And so that film... Rademakers was a very renowned theatre director. So I went because I thought it would be interesting to make a film abroad. Rademakers spoke French very well. So in the team, it was a film that was mostly filmed, there was some exterior, but it was mostly shot in a studio. There were special effects to do which I was interested in because actually it was the story of two guys that looked like each other like two drops of water.

[Q] Yes, yes.

One of them was blond and the other was dark-haired.

[Q] I remember that film very well.

Well, and so... It's a film that lasted a very long time, we filmed for I don't remember how many, 10-12 weeks, it was an important film for the Dutch. The team was... In the team that I had there were people who spoke French and others who spoke English, so I didn't have any problems working with the grips and the electricians. And... well, for the rest of the team... So with Fons Rademakers, it was extraordinary because while we were filming... we're going to do it again, so he went to see his actors, and then it lasted... He did it again, he explained the film in detail again. And I'm not joking, I sat in my chair, I had a chair with my name on it, and I read the newspaper while he explained, because I didn't understand anything, it was all in Dutch, and it's quite a complicated language. And afterwards he came to let me know if things had changed, and he would say, 'For you nothing's changed' or yes, at that point he's going to move, he's going to do such and such. But it was very well organised.

And so I realised, not straight away, because so at one point, all of a sudden I thought it was a very strange film for me, because I realised during filming that actually the questions; we were talking about it before... How can you talk to Jean-Luc, etc., who's in a bad mood, etc., crocolion. In the end, when you look at the director work, if there are things we don't know, the way in which he directs his actors gives you a lot of clues, to know what state he is in. And there suddenly, it's almost like on a Garrel film where he never tells his actors anything, but there all of a sudden I was completely bowled over, it was... In the end, I was shooting a film, I wasn't involved anymore. Although when the director goes to talk with his actors, I don't get involved, I don't deal with that. But the way in which he explains things to them, it sometimes answers questions that we could ask ourselves later on, we need... Well, anyway I need to know. It may also be the reason why doing the frame is also very interesting. Independently from the fact that we master the entire system, at the same time we get into the director's psychology. And that's very important.
