[Q] When you were younger, it never occurred to you to make films. And when you look back on your itinerary, you can still think, 'Well, it isn't bad'.

Well, no, I didn't say that. No, the only thing I want to say is that every time... Well, I filmed with people who said, 'Oh la la, I did that film it was a childhood dream', etc. It isn't my childhood dream, as I said, first of all my childhood dream when I was a kid it must have been to become a professional cyclist. But well, when you're a kid... I mean it's also... Right now, I'm writing a book, well, a few pages, I'm waiting to find a publisher. And I told a story saying... I start the thing by saying: I'm in Los Angeles... And there again I have to say: it's not a childhood dream, because when I was a kid I never dreamt of going to Los Angeles or of going to Hollywood. Because first of all, Hollywood... I didn't want to go to the cinema. Well, so when you're a kid, when I was a kid meaning... 70 years ago, when you were a kid 70 years ago, when you dreamt of going to America, you didn't go to America, you went to New York. Well, so I didn't even think of going to London. Afterwards, you want to see these pathetic things. When you're in Afghanistan you want to see Balkh where Alexander married Roxanne. So naturally you wonder how they did it because it's a pile of dust. But at the same time it's simple, it's part of...

No, but I don't disown anything. In fact, I don't disown any of the films that I made. There are films that I think, well, I shouldn't have made them. Either way, I'm not one of those people who want to look back saying: if I had known... No, no, if I had known... what are we going to do tomorrow? I mean, it isn't... What's done is done. So would I do it all again? I don't have a clue because it depends on how things happen. Well, I spent... In the end, I'm criticised for my militaristic side because I spent almost 20 years making or watching war. Well, I like soldiers because at least they go to the end of things. Because nowadays people are no longer capable of doing it. We don't have to like soldiers. Well, it's my problem. No, what I wanted to say isn't... I don't think you have to... I absolutely don't regret making films, I don't regret meeting the people I did.
