I had a gaffer with whom I got on very well who was Fernand Coquet. We had been introduced. So I didn't ask what the difference was. I was told, 'He's a really good chief electrician. He isn't a gaffer but he's a really good chief electrician'. I didn't know what a gaffer was, I thought I couldn't ask. I would find out later on.

[Q] But it's the first time that you had a chief electrician?

Yes, yes, it was the first time. The first time I had a chief electrician. The first time I had a key grip.

[Q] So you were discovering the equipment?

I was discovering. It was literally a discovery for me. Suddenly, I was confronted with things I knew absolutely nothing about. So... and in fact, it went relatively well. I had taken my wife with me who was... My first wife was Vietnamese and she had given birth over there, which means that I have a mixed raced son who is also Basque. Although I am like the Russian proverb: the swallow which is born in the stable is not a horse. That's a nice way of putting it. It's really clear.

[Q] The swallow?

Which is born in the stable is not a horse. Yes, it's true. It means that being born in the country isn't enough to be...

[Q] Of course. So you had brought your wife on the shoot of 'Ramuntcho'?

Yes. So the shoot took place... So there was also... Schoendoerffer was naturally... had yet again been given a...

[Q] A technical consultant?

Yes. A technical consultant.

[Q] Really? Why? 'The Devil's Pass' hadn't taught him anything?

No, for The Devil's Pass they had been considered co-directors, so... so this time it was a very friendly guy, who was very nice, very co-operative with Pierre. It was Jean-Paul Sassi.

[Q] Oh yes, Jean-Paul Sassi who worked in television?

Who worked in television. I think the poor guy's dead. I think. I don't know. Well, I know that there were a lot of things that upset him about his career as...

[Q] Director?

As director.

[Q] So the gaffers and the grips that you had?

I had... The gaffer was from Paris, the key grip was also a guy from Paris, but on the other hand, the others were from Bordeaux.

[Q] Oh yes, who worked for Couzinet?

Who worked for Couzinet. And in fact, it became a small problem, because they were paid the same amount that Couzinet paid them; because Couzinet had told them, 'Whatever you do, do not pay them more so that I don't get into trouble', but they went to see the union saying, 'We get three francs fifty when we should be getting...'

[Q] A lot more?

A lot more. So Beauregard had to compensate.

[Q] But... so Couzinet was used as a service provider?

No, he wasn't a provider; he was nothing at all. Yes, a service provider. Meaning that he rented the equipment he wasn't using to us. But in fact... in fact it was apparently cheaper, cheaper than if we had rented it from Chevreau or Alga. Although at the time, Alga was still an agency where cameramen rented out their personal equipment.
