Holidays in France

Well, there was that stay in Paris. While I was in Paris, I of course had holidays. The first was when... no, I was still a student – I went on a trip, part on foot, part in a coach, with two writers: with Zygmunt Kałużyński who was my first husband – it was a friendly... a friendly marriage which didn't last – and with Wilhelm Mach whose name is among the literary greats of Polish literature. He was an extremely nice person, very friendly. And so the three of us journeyed together. We were aiming to reach the sea, to reach Nice – somewhere around there. Along the way we stopped off in youth hostels. It wasn't... it was often in the hay or just anywhere, but I was at an age when I would do things like that quite readily and it made no real difference to me. That's when I fell in love with that part of France that I still love to this day, namely Provence. After that we stayed by the coast, we went to Nice and stretched out on the beach right next to the expensive hotels and rich foreigners and then we came back as students – I'm regressing a bit here. However, I tried to spend my holidays in places that I found interesting and since I'm hugely attached to and need to be able to see the sea, I used to go to Brittany and to Normandy for my holidays. One holiday, just before my return, I spent travelling across France with Ksawery Pruszyński. That was a wonderful journey because we stopped in every town where it was possible for us to stop. In those days, not everyone had a car so this was an excellent opportunity. We stopped finally by the Spanish border and spent the rest of our holiday there surrounded by beautiful countryside, and the Basque people who have one thing of which they ought not to boast, namely, their food. Unfortunately, the Basques have a cheese which isn't very good and even the things that we liked, their dishes, weren't very good. So there the culture differed – the Basque culinary culture is not very refined. However, we didn't suffer too badly on this account.

No... ten pobyt paryski. Chodziło nam o to, żeby dotrzeć do morza – do Nicei, gdzieś tam w te okolice. No i wtedy właśnie pokochałam zwłaszcza tę część Francji, którą kocham do dzisiaj to jest Prowansję.
