We called this group – I suggested two words very typical of me – Semitic Action. I invented the term Semitic Region instead of the Middle East very early on, because I said, what do you mean Middle East? East of where? East of London? Of New York? Berlin? This is an incorrect perception in general. This area is the centre of our life. I've never used the words Middle East, and I called it the Semitic Region. So we called the new organization Semitic Action, and we started working on the program. It took us a year and-a-half. We would meet every week at Café Herlinger here on Ben Yehuda Street, not far from here. We appointed sub-committees which would meet in the middle of the week and for a year and-a-half we worked on a complete change for the State of Israel. It never came to fruition, not before and not after, but I'm very proud of it, this document, even today. In the end we published a document that we called the Hebrew Manifesto. We did it in chapters. I was in charge of the regional chapter. The regional chapter said there must be an Arab-Palestinian state within the framework of an Israeli-Palestinian federation. Recently there has been a debate conducted in Haaretz. And this federation, which I called the Jordan Union, would be part of a large confederation of the entire Middle East, Israel and all of the Arab countries and perhaps also Turkey, Iran and Abyssinia and Ethiopia. We held a press conference and presented it to the public. We held all sorts of gatherings across the country. Right in the middle, Wadi Salib erupted, and we tried to integrate that. We proposed to Ben Harush that he establish a joint list for the elections. He did not want to so we helped him with his list which did not pass the electoral threshold. And we issued a newspaper called Etgar, a weekly or fortnightly paper which appeared for a few years until the next war. And HaOlam HaZeh worked. HaOlam HaZeh worked until the Six-Day War. Sorry, sorry, sorry, until the Lavon Affair!

Uri Avnery (1923-2018) was an Israeli writer, journalist and founder of the Gush Shalom peace movement. As a teenager, he joined the Zionist paramilitary group, Irgun. Later, Avnery was elected to the Knesset from 1965 to 1974 and from 1979 to 1981. He was also the editor-in-chief of the weekly news magazine, 'HaOlam HaZeh' from 1950 until it closed in 1993. He famously crossed the lines during the Siege of Beirut to meet Yasser Arafat on 3 July 1982, the first time the Palestinian leader ever met with an Israeli. Avnery was the author of several books about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, including '1948: A Soldier's Tale, the Bloody Road to Jerusalem' (2008); 'Israel's Vicious Circle' (2008); and 'My Friend, the Enemy' (1986).
