Who was Yitzhak Rabin? Yitzhak Rabin was a man whom I had always really liked, because he was shrewd, matter-of-fact, without any of the wisecracks made by the 'smart asses'. Exactly the opposite of Shimon Peres, which was already enough of a recommendation for me. And he had no 'small talk'. You went into the room and the serious talk began after a minute. And it made sense. What we tend to call 'logical'.  Logic has one great virtue but also a great drawback which is that you see reality as it is and not as you would like it to be, you analyze it without involving your emotions and you draw conclusions from this analysis. This was exactly Rabin. The negative side was that this man had no imagination whatsoever. Such a man cannot imagine a different reality. He saw reality as it was, and this was the limitation of his thought processes – and this, too, was Rabin, exactly.

There was another man who hated him, apart from Shimon Peres, and that was Abba Eban. Abba Eban hated him because when Rabin had been Ambassador in Washington, he reported directly to Golda Meir and received his instructions directly from Golda Meir, and Foreign Minister Abba Eban was not part of this so he really didn't like that. Abba Eban was graced with loquacity and it was always a pleasure to sit down with him and talk to him because he was really a brilliant man, a man who lacked character, lacked integrity, but what a brain! What a brilliant mind, what language! What languages! Languages! Hebrew and English but apparently also Persian and Arabic. He spoke Arabic so well that he once spoke in Nazareth and an old Arab sat there saying: 'Could someone translate this into Arabic?' because he spoke Arabic that he had studied at the University of Cambridge. You know that in Arabic there is a huge difference between the literary language and the spoken language. Abba Eban once said to me: 'True, Rabin is a pragmatic man'. Sorry – an 'analytical ' man − he always said, 'Rabin is a very analytical man'. It was almost a synonym for him. Then he said: 'What does analytical mean? Analytical means to dismantle things into components. The problem is that Rabin was very good at it; he just didn't know how to put them back together again'.  Abba Eban was very good at such definitions. Rabin too. Rabin had definitions. Despite the fact that he did not speak much and that he was not at all talkative, he had about a dozen expressions that are unforgettable to this day: 'The settlers can spin around like propellers, but I will not answer them'. And: 'Peres is an indefatigable subversive'. And: 'Emigrants are the fallout of losers', and so on and so forth, things that have become inalienable assets of Hebrew culture.
