Now, there was one problem: no one knew who Issam Sartawi was. The name was completely unknown. So, before the delegation left, I spent the night going through all the books I had on the PLO and I think at around 4:00 or 5:00 am, I found the name and I realized that Issam Sartawi is an Arab born in Acre who grew up in Iraq. He studied medicine in America and became an acclaimed heart surgeon. He returned to Israel during the Six Day War, founded a fedayeen organization of his own, fell out with George Habash and the Popular Front − they had a shoot-out in Amman and later he decided to join Fatah and his entire organization merged with Arafat's Fatah.

Early in the morning, I woke Matti Peled. I called him and told him all these details, so that at least they would know something about the man they were going to meet. They went there. It was agreed that the host of all these meetings would be a man named Henri Curiel. I think that here I have to pause and say who Curiel was, because he is important to this story. Henri Curiel was an Egyptian Jew and − as were many Jews in Egypt – he was of Italian-Spanish origin. His family had been in Egypt for several generations, a rich family. He was quite an intellectual, and he wore thick glasses. He established the first communist party in Egypt, which later split. There were several communist parties and because there were too many Jews in one party, the non-Jews formed a second party and so on. Curiel was one of the sharpest people I ever met. A man with a mind like a razor. Every debate with him was a pleasure.

One day in the 1950s, 1954/5/6, something like that, he criticized Abdel Nasser, then Abdel Nasser composed a list of people and expelled them from Egypt. The whole group, all of whom were communists and were either well-off or super rich, settled in Paris and prospered economically, except Curiel course. In Paris they established something which it is very hard to define: a group of Egyptian Jews, almost all of whom were wealthy entrepreneurs, traders, people like that, who formed a kind of private 'Foreign Ministry' for revolutionaries around the world. They were involved in revolutions all over the world from South Africa, the struggle against apartheid, the Algerian War of Independence, everywhere. They had money and emissaries of all these movements who came to Paris and were under their patronage, and they financed them. They were politically involved in the affairs of Israel, they were communists.

Uri Avnery (1923-2018) was an Israeli writer, journalist and founder of the Gush Shalom peace movement. As a teenager, he joined the Zionist paramilitary group, Irgun. Later, Avnery was elected to the Knesset from 1965 to 1974 and from 1979 to 1981. He was also the editor-in-chief of the weekly news magazine, 'HaOlam HaZeh' from 1950 until it closed in 1993. He famously crossed the lines during the Siege of Beirut to meet Yasser Arafat on 3 July 1982, the first time the Palestinian leader ever met with an Israeli. Avnery was the author of several books about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, including '1948: A Soldier's Tale, the Bloody Road to Jerusalem' (2008); 'Israel's Vicious Circle' (2008); and 'My Friend, the Enemy' (1986).
