I went to New York along with Amnon Zichroni, my legal advisor, and we held negotiations at the end of which we reached an agreement − I would sell him all of my shares of HaOlam HaZeh, but they insisted on one condition: that I would continue to be the editor for as long as they wanted. I agreed, with one stipulation: that there would be no interference and I would continue  to run the paper as I had until then, making unilateral decisions about everything, but that a four-page supplement to the newspaper would be under their authority, and so it was. It was a very serious crisis for me, but there was no choice. I flatter myself that I am a very good at accepting the inevitable when there is no choice and that's what we did. HaOlam HaZeh went over to them, and they appointed a very controversial person as their representative, Binyamin Gibli. He was the supervisor on behalf of Ganger, sat in meetings with us, and after a few months, I already wanted to leave. The situation was truly embarrassing. So they brought in that fat guy from the television, Rafi Ginat, and I left. And I must say it was a difficult crisis. My previous one had been about leaving the Knesset, and this was the second crisis, more serious, because HaOlam HaZeh was much more important to me than the Knesset.

I left and then had to decide what to do next, for the rest of my life. I did not think it would take long, but even so... It became known that Uri Avnery was free and both Haaretz and Maariv were interested to know if I would come work for them. This was the new Maariv, after [Robert] Maxwell bought the newspaper, an angel came from heaven and bought the paper, no one knew him, and he appointed Dov Yudkovsky who all his life led a bitter war against Maariv. But he quarrelled with Noni Mozes, Noni Mozes did not want him, Noni Mozes did not want anybody and actually kicked him out. So then he landed in Ma'ariv and an absurd situation arose between two mortal enemies, Yediot Aharonot and Maariv, who hated each other in a way that it is impossible to describe, more than the Jews and the Nazis, and suddenly the editor of one publication became the editor of the second. Both of them made me rather tempting offers. Haaretz of course was closer to me, but Maariv made me an offer I couldn't refuse. Over the years, Dov Yudkovsky had taken employees from HaOlam HaZeh and made them offers they couldn't say no to and so he took them all, all those who were talented. His offer to me was that with money from Maxwell I'd travel around Eastern Europe with Rachel to all of the ex-communist countries, writing articles that would be published in Maariv, and then later they would be reprinted in a book and Rachel would take the pictures, and her photographs would accompany the articles and the book. Well, who could refuse such a thing? And this marked the beginning of a new chapter, which we shall discuss later. As they used to say about novels that were serialized in the newspapers, 'to be continued in the next issue'.

Uri Avnery (1923-2018) was an Israeli writer, journalist and founder of the Gush Shalom peace movement. As a teenager, he joined the Zionist paramilitary group, Irgun. Later, Avnery was elected to the Knesset from 1965 to 1974 and from 1979 to 1981. He was also the editor-in-chief of the weekly news magazine, 'HaOlam HaZeh' from 1950 until it closed in 1993. He famously crossed the lines during the Siege of Beirut to meet Yasser Arafat on 3 July 1982, the first time the Palestinian leader ever met with an Israeli. Avnery was the author of several books about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, including '1948: A Soldier's Tale, the Bloody Road to Jerusalem' (2008); 'Israel's Vicious Circle' (2008); and 'My Friend, the Enemy' (1986).
