While this was going on, Arafat welcomed us and we talked. There is a picture of me with Arafat with my hand raised, taken during the same period when the crowds gathered in the courtyard of Muqata where Arafat would speak to them from the window. One of our members, Oren Maddix, was a distant relative of the Maddix family of England. Monica Maddix was, I think, the best friend Rachel ever had. We'll digress for a moment to speak about that family. The husband, Stanley Maddix, was born in Kenya on the Kenyan highlands which we mistakenly call Uganda. It was there that Herzl wanted to temporarily establish the Jewish national home in what is now Kenya, not Uganda. So he was English. He looked more English than the English, he was blond, and he was born there. One day in 1948, an Israeli emissary went there to recruit people to what later became the IDF. Of course, Maddix enlisted and all of the youth from there enlisted to serve and arranged to meet the next day on the train platform at 10:00 to set off for Israel. He, of course, arrived exactly one minute before that time, but was the only one, nobody else came. So then he went to Israel alone. He became a captain in the IDF, commanded a platoon that conquered Gush Halav in Galilee, and here at the Gat Rimon hotel which faced us he met a girl, also a volunteer from England, and married her. This was the Maddix couple and, as I said, Monica Maddix became Rachel's dearest friend. They had a cousin here in Israel who joined us every day while we were forming the human shield. At first, he didn't sleep at night but stood with Arafat's Palestinian bodyguards and argued with them and listened to them, they aroused his curiosity – that was the first time. Soon after, Arafat was again in danger so we positioned ourselves there again, and met with Arafat, of course. There were some interesting days.  Obviously, everyone around us was Palestinian and we met the people in Arafat's immediate circle, his bodyguards and we gradually got to know Arafat himself more.

Uri Avnery (1923-2018) was an Israeli writer, journalist and founder of the Gush Shalom peace movement. As a teenager, he joined the Zionist paramilitary group, Irgun. Later, Avnery was elected to the Knesset from 1965 to 1974 and from 1979 to 1981. He was also the editor-in-chief of the weekly news magazine, 'HaOlam HaZeh' from 1950 until it closed in 1993. He famously crossed the lines during the Siege of Beirut to meet Yasser Arafat on 3 July 1982, the first time the Palestinian leader ever met with an Israeli. Avnery was the author of several books about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, including '1948: A Soldier's Tale, the Bloody Road to Jerusalem' (2008); 'Israel's Vicious Circle' (2008); and 'My Friend, the Enemy' (1986).
