Certainly readers will pick up on mistakes here and there, although I must say, the first volume came out a year ago, more than a year, and to this day no one has written to me or phoned me to tell me I was wrong in some detail or another, it's weird. Except once. One day, I got a phone call and someone started shouting at me and went on non-stop for about half an hour; I couldn't get a word in, non-stop screaming without even pausing for breath. It was the son of Uri Dan.  I wrote about Uri Dan repeating what I'd been told when I met him: his father had been a soldier in the British army and was on a ship that sank. It was an infamous incident where a ship bearing soldiers sank in the Mediterranean Sea on the way to Italy, to the Italian front, and Uri Dan's father drowned. The son grew up with Musa the sailor who was my bodyguard for a few weeks, and so his whole life he had needed a father. First that was me, later Moshe Dayan, and at the end Arik Sharon. I had written in good faith; that was what I knew. The son shouted: 'My father didn't drown, my father didn't die!' – his father this and his father that – and: 'You're a liar, and you're nasty!' etc. I was afraid that if he would come here, it would be incident number two with a knife, but he seemed to calm down. Where did this story come from? After all, Musa the sailor whose name was Dahan, Musa Dahan, who was my bodyguard, he wanted me to give this young man work – his real name was probably not Dahan, perhaps Uri was his family name, I don't know, something like that. I gave him this name as I gave names to many in HaOlam HaZeh and he probably invented this story to convince me to give him a job as he thought it would help. But apart from this unfortunate incident, to this day in over a year, I think, I haven't had a single comment saying that something is inaccurate. This may change in the second volume that should be coming next month and should be in the stores in two months' time. It starts with my election to Knesset and so all of the political affairs will be in the second volume, and there people may want to make corrections and make changes, but I don't think there will be any inaccuracy, certainly nothing fundamental. Like I said, I didn't hide anything just because I found it unpleasant. There are some things which are very unpleasant for me, such as my recommendation to occupy Damascus and my vote in support of uniting Jerusalem and other, less important things. I hope the book will appear and it will lead up to the death of Rachel in 2011. I don't think the rest of my life there will generate enough material for a third volume, so these two will suffice.

Uri Avnery (1923-2018) was an Israeli writer, journalist and founder of the Gush Shalom peace movement. As a teenager, he joined the Zionist paramilitary group, Irgun. Later, Avnery was elected to the Knesset from 1965 to 1974 and from 1979 to 1981. He was also the editor-in-chief of the weekly news magazine, 'HaOlam HaZeh' from 1950 until it closed in 1993. He famously crossed the lines during the Siege of Beirut to meet Yasser Arafat on 3 July 1982, the first time the Palestinian leader ever met with an Israeli. Avnery was the author of several books about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, including '1948: A Soldier's Tale, the Bloody Road to Jerusalem' (2008); 'Israel's Vicious Circle' (2008); and 'My Friend, the Enemy' (1986).
