[Q] You started university, in some way this was a new world. You suddenly became a good student…

Yes.

[Q] Say something about that, about studying, about this introduction to a new way of learning…

Well, it's… what I said… it's was my passion, it was politics in the broadest sense and the gathering of knowledge. At that time, the economics department had several excellent lecturers. There was the great economics historian, Witold Kula who was an internationally cultured man. He was very closely linked with the Annales school, Braudel's renowned school of economic history in France. His son is also an acclaimed historian, and his wife, Nina Assorodobraj, was my professor in the department of sociology. Oscar Lange was in that department, too. He had several official functions – he was vice-chairman of the National Council, I think. He never said anything morally questionable; he preferred to keep his own counsel. As an economist he was exceptional, writing his most outstanding works before the war. He participated in a famous debate about the possibility of the existence of a socialist economy and he presented a theoretical justification in support of the existence of a market socialist economy. It was his lecture, like Kalecki's. Kalecki was a very famous analyst and he, Michał Kalecki, anticipated many of the elements of Keynes' thinking, and many people believe that he, in fact, was Keynes' predecessor. He was never as famous but he remains a respected figure to this day – he's highly respected in economic history and is more universal. He didn't concern himself with socialist economics which disappeared virtually like Atlantis. His area of interest was market economics and the problems of capitalist opportunistic cycles. Both were left-wing although Kalecki didn't engage in politics. Both had long episodes of living and working in the West.
