I think it's worth my mentioning two experiences I had in my further struggles with the theatre. A few years after Crime and Punishment, I thought of another work by Dostoyevsky that I had to transfer to the stage. That was The Idiot. There was one thing I knew about The Idiot which was that among the notions about this wonderful, exceptionally clever, unique story there was one that said that the last chapter written by Dostoyevsky was perhaps the most mysterious, most beautiful and strongest fragment of all of European literature.
